We explain why you should use a swimming parachute in your training sessions. A swimming parachute for workouts is a 1.5-meter rope with a belt at one end and a 30-40 centimeter diameter weight at the other end. Additional weights can be added to increase swimming resistance, although this is not recommended for novice swimmers or those with less refined techniques.

What is the purpose of the swimming parachute?

To increase resistance while swimming.

What does it feel like when swimming with the parachute?

The main sensation is the resistance to forward movement, which is why focusing on technique is crucial. A great alternative is to use a snorkel to further concentrate on swimming technique.

The rope may slightly impede the freestyle and backstroke kick. To reduce the risk of the feet getting tangled in the rope, reduce the kick’s amplitude and increase its frequency.

The goal is to achieve high-quality resisted swimming. A good way to achieve this is by focusing on trunk rotation, achieved through shoulder movement, and maintaining an elevated hip position. This prevents the body from sinking and increases the effectiveness of the force in the water.

What are the objectives when working with the swimming parachute?

  • Specific strength training in the water.
  • Awareness of swimming technique.
  • Explosive strength training.
  • Contrasting workouts. Example: 25m technical swimming with a parachute – 25m swimming without a parachute.

How does it help improve?

  • As there is resistance training in the water, it forces you to have better swimming technique and be aware if, at any point in the stroke, you do not properly support yourself in the water, as you will slip.
  • To perform specific speed workouts.

Considerations for use:

  • Use it for short distances, 25m – 50m.
  • Attach it to the waist with the belt at the center of the back when swimming freestyle, breaststroke, and butterfly. For backstroke, the belt comes out from the abdominal area.
  • The new ones come with a cork to make the belt float and interfere less with leg kicking, but it can still be bothersome.
